Drawing with Mark: Why is the rum gone?
Greetings Brigadiers! Welcome to another instalment of drawing with Mark: the creative maelstrom of crafting Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean!
My process video covers everything from the initial pencil sketch to the final, vibrant colours. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to breathe life into the infamous Captain with a splash of artistic flair, you’re in for a treat.
I begin with the roughest of sketches. This stage is all about capturing the essence of Jack Sparrow’s with a loose structure. The rough sketch is my playground—no need to get all precious with the details just yet. It’s all about the energy and confidence of line.
Then, I start bringing in the details. This is where Jack Sparrow’s distinctive features start to pop out. We’re talking eyes full of mischief, the infamous tricorn hat, and every little bit of pirate drip.
The inking stage is where our pirate captain gets his sharpest edge. Finally, we dive into the colouring phase. Here’s where he really comes alive. Each hue and shade is carefully chosen to capture the swashbuckling spirit of Jack, from the rich, worn textures of his coat to the vibrant glint of his accessories. This stage brings the whole piece together, transforming it from a detailed line drawing into a lively, eye-catching piece.
During this entire process, I made use of a reference photo of Jack Sparrow to capture the character's true essence. Reference photos help guide you through the details and nuances that make a character instantly recognisable. Having a solid reference helped me nail down the finer aspects of Jack’s iconic look and ensured the final piece not only looks great but stays true to the character we all know and love.
And in true Jack Sparrow fashion, I was drunk the whole time I drew this.
All in all I'm very happy how it turned out...all the blood sweat and tears but worth it for the result. Art is blood and treasure, my friends. Blood and treasure.
