A Quick Guide to Comic Book Variants

If you’ve started collecting comics, you may notice that one issue can have several different covers. These are called variant covers.

Publishers release variants to celebrate artists, create special collector editions, or offer exclusive covers for conventions and retailers.

Here’s a simple guide to some of the most common terms you’ll see when buying comics.

Metallic shiny cover

Foil Variant ✨

A foil cover uses a special metallic printing process that reflects light.

Think of it like a shiny or chrome effect on the cover.

Why collectors like them

  • Eye-catching reflective finish
  • Premium collectible feel
  • Often used for special or limited releases

*Foil variants can come as both trade dress or virgin. See below*

Artwork only, no logos or text

Virgin Cover

A virgin cover removes most of the usual comic book graphics.

That means:

  • No logo
  • No barcode
  • No price box
  • No publisher graphics (called “trade dress”)

What you’re left with is just the artwork.

Why collectors like them

  • Shows the full illustration without anything covering it
  • Often produced in smaller quantities

Standard comic cover with title/logo

Trade Dress Cover

A trade dress cover is the standard version of a comic.

It includes:

  • Title logo
  • Issue number
  • Publisher branding
  • Barcode

Same artwork, just with the normal comic book information printed on top.

Thicker premium cover

Card Stock Cover

This refers to the paper thickness used for the cover.

Card stock covers are:

  • Thicker than regular covers
  • More durable
  • Higher quality feeling

Think of it like the difference between regular paper and a premium art print.

*Card stock covers can come as both trade dress or virgin. See above*

Same artwork, different colors

Colourway Variants

A colourway variant uses the same artwork but with different colors.

Examples might include:

  • Alternate color palettes
  • Darker or lighter versions
  • Black and white editions

Collectors sometimes enjoy owning multiple colourways of the same artwork.

*Colourway covers can come as both trade dress or virgin. See above*

Limited release tied to a specific store or event

Exclusive Variants

Some covers are made specifically for:

  • Comic conventions
  • Retail stores
  • Online shops
  • Artist stores

These are called exclusive variants and are often printed in limited quantities.

*Exclusive Variants can come as standard stock, card stock, foil, trade dress, virgin, or any combination of these.

Authenticated

CGC Graded Copies

Some comics are professionally graded by companies like Certified Guaranty Company.

The comic is:

  • Evaluated for condition
  • Assigned a grade from 0.5 to 10.0
  • Sealed in a protective plastic case
  • CGC can include signed, unsigned and/or remarked covers

This process helps preserve the book and gives collectors a verified condition grade.
